Google combines its two premier artificial intelligence research divisions, DeepMind and Google Brain, into a single, unified unit called Google DeepMind. Demis Hassabis, the co-founder and CEO of DeepMind, leads this newly formed group.
The reorganization establishes a clear leadership structure for the combined unit. Koray Kavukcuoglu oversees a newly created scientific board as the VP of research, while Eli Collins steps in as VP of product. Jeff Dean, a co-founder of Google Brain, takes on an elevated role as chief scientist for both Google DeepMind and the independent Google Research division, reporting directly to CEO Sundar Pichai.
Google Research remains a separate entity that focuses on fundamental computer science advances in areas like quantum computing, privacy, and climate sustainability. Meanwhile, Google DeepMind focuses strictly on driving the next generation of AI breakthroughs and integrating them directly into Google products. Hassabis expresses that this close collaboration promises to deliver bold and responsible world-changing advancements in the AI space.
