Google Merges Waze and Maps Teams to Reduce Operational Costs
Google unifies its Maps and Waze teams under one division to eliminate overlapping work and improve efficiency. The tech giant keeps Waze as a standalone app despite the internal restructuring.
Google combines the teams behind its Maps product and the Waze navigation app as part of a broader push to cut costs and consolidate operations. Waze’s 500 employees move under Google’s Geo organization, which already oversees Maps, Earth, and Street View. Current Waze CEO Neha Parikh leaves her role as part of this transition.
Despite the merger, Google maintains that Waze will continue to operate as a standalone service known for its crowdsourced traffic alerts. The company states it does not expect any layoffs from this specific reorganization. However, the primary goal of the restructuring is to reduce overlap in mapmaking efforts between the two previously separate teams.
This consolidation reflects a larger directive from Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who aims to make the company 20% more productive by running on fewer resources. By merging teams that build overlapping products, Google hopes to reverse the slowdown caused by recent overhiring and streamline its operations during a turbulent period for the tech industry.
