Google starts opening access to its Bard artificial intelligence chatbot to users in the U.S. and U.K. through a new waitlist system. The search giant warns that the rollout process is slow and does not specify when the tool will become generally available. Interested users sign up on a dedicated webpage to gain entry to the early preview.
The Bard chatbot currently allows users to ask a limited number of questions per session but places no restrictions on the total number of sessions a person can launch. In response to queries, the system generates up to three different draft answers and includes a "Google it" button that automatically opens a standard search tab. Early reports indicate that Bard delivers faster response times than the rival chatbot integrated into Microsoft's Bing search engine.
Bard runs on a large language model called LaMDA and claims to offer more up-to-date and comprehensive information than competitors like ChatGPT. However, the chatbot still shows limitations, such as refusing to provide biographical information about specific journalists even when that data is widely available on Google's own platform. Like all generative AI tools, Bard openly admits that its answers may not always be correct.
