Google Overhauls Cloud AI Into Unified Gemini Agent Platform

Google unveils a major rebranding and consolidation of its AI platform at Cloud Next 2026, renaming Vertex AI to the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform and absorbing Google Agentspace into a unified Gemini Enterprise product. The sweeping changes reflect a deliberate shift toward what Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian calls "The Agentic Cloud." By combining its various AI tools into a single cohesive system, Google aims to simplify enterprise adoption and streamline the deployment of AI agents across business operations.

The updated platform includes a wide array of new tools and integrations, such as Workspace Studio for no-code agent building and a Model Garden that features over 200 models including Anthropic's Claude. Google also introduces partner agents from major enterprise companies like Salesforce, Workday, and ServiceNow, alongside Project Mariner for web-browsing tasks. Additionally, the company releases the stable version of the Agent Development Kit across four programming languages, managed MCP servers via Apigee, and a production-grade Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol currently used by 150 organizations.

Kurian directly contrasts Google's approach with competitors by arguing that other vendors hand customers disconnected pieces rather than a complete platform. This strategy arrives as Google fights for enterprise market share against OpenAI, which sees significant revenue from its coding and browsing agents, and Anthropic, which boasts massive adoption of its Model Context Protocol. Despite ranking third in cloud market share behind AWS and Microsoft Azure, Google leverages its 50% year-over-year growth rate and full-stack vertical integration—from custom silicon to Workspace distribution—to carve out a unique competitive advantage.
