Google develops the Pathways Language Model, known as PaLM, as a family of large language models designed to serve as a foundation for multiple AI use cases. The latest iteration, PaLM 2, currently powers Google's Bard conversational AI technology and enables generative AI capabilities within Google Workspace applications like Gmail and Docs. Through a Google Cloud service called Duet AI, this model also brings advanced intelligent features to enterprise users.

PaLM 2 handles a wide variety of complex tasks based on simple user prompts. The model generates text on any topic, summarizes large volumes of content, and performs detailed content analysis such as sentiment evaluation. Additionally, it possesses strong reasoning capabilities built on a diverse training dataset of scientific papers and mathematical expressions, allowing it to process logic and common-sense problems effectively.

Beyond standard text operations, PaLM 2 writes and analyzes computer code in over 80 programming languages and translates text across multiple languages. Google also offers specialized variants of the base model to target specific industries, such as Med-PaLM 2 for life sciences and medical information, and Sec-PaLM for cybersecurity threat analysis. Like rival models, PaLM relies on a transformer neural network architecture optimized by Google's custom Pathways machine learning system.
