Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL Introduce Radar-Powered Air Gestures
Google officially unveils the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, featuring built-in radar technology for touchless air gestures and lightning-fast face unlock. The new smartphones also boast impressive dual-lens camera systems with advanced zoom capabilities.
Google officially unveils its 2019 flagship smartphones, the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, focusing on what the company calls "natural interactions." Despite extensive prior leaks, the announcement highlights significant hardware upgrades and innovative features that set the new devices apart from previous models.
The most notable addition is a built-in radar chip based on Google's Project Soli, which powers the new Motion Sense feature. This technology allows users to control the phone with air gestures, such as waving to skip songs or flicking a wrist to answer calls. Additionally, the radar detects when a user picks up the device, enabling a dramatically faster face unlock process that scans the face before the phone is even fully in view.
On the photography side, both models feature a prominent square camera hump housing two lenses: a 16-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12.2-megapixel primary lens. Google's advanced algorithms combine with this dual-lens setup to deliver remarkable zoom capabilities, producing high-quality images even from a significant distance. The camera system also supports various video recording options, including 4K at 30fps and 1080p at up to 120fps.
