Google Pixel 8 Pro Brings Generative AI Directly to Devices
Google's Pixel 8 Pro uses its new Tensor G3 chip to run generative AI models locally without needing an internet connection. This on-device processing powers upgraded photo editing, audio summaries, and smarter text replies.
Google's newly announced Pixel 8 Pro is the first smartphone to run Google's generative AI models directly on the device. The custom-built Tensor G3 chip processes "distilled" versions of Google's text- and image-generating models locally, which eliminates the need for an internet connection to perform complex AI tasks.
This local processing power significantly improves the phone's Magic Eraser tool so that it removes larger objects and people without leaving smudges. The AI generates new pixels to seamlessly fill in the empty spaces, and a separate on-device model intelligently sharpens and enhances the details of zoomed-in photos.
The on-device AI also extends to audio recording and typing by providing automatic summaries of meeting recordings and powering higher-quality, context-aware smart replies in Gboard. While the upgraded Magic Eraser is available at launch, the other generative AI features will arrive on the Pixel 8 Pro in December through a software update.
