Google Play Store Embraces Cleaner Design and Dedicated App Tabs

Google rolls out a major visual overhaul for the Play Store, featuring a cleaner layout and a new bottom navigation bar heavily inspired by Apple's App Store. The update separates apps and games into distinct tabs while removing the Music section entirely.

Google unveils a major visual makeover for the Play Store that brings a cleaner, whiter layout and a completely revamped navigation system. Most notably, the tech giant moves the main navigation bar to the bottom of the screen and splits the experience into four simple tabs: Games, Apps, Movies & TV, and Books. This change closely mirrors the layout Apple introduces to its iOS App Store in 2017.

By giving Apps and Games their own dedicated top-level tabs, Google aims to serve users more relevant content and better organize the massive library of available software. The familiar categories like "For You," "Top Charts," and "Premium" still exist, but they now live inside these two main tabs instead of cluttering the homepage. Additionally, Google completely removes the Music tab from the primary navigation, likely in preparation for upcoming changes to Google Play Music and YouTube Music.

The updated design also improves the individual app listing pages by surfacing richer information near the top of the screen alongside a much larger install button. Key details such as app ratings and age requirements are now immediately visible without scrolling. Furthermore, the store integrates Google's new icon system to give the entire browsing experience a fresh, modernized feel.
