The company temporarily suspends this feature last week after users discover that the AI tool produces historically inaccurate images, such as depicting the U.S. Founding Fathers as a diverse group instead of white men.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Hassabis explains that the blunder stems from a well-intended diversity feature that applies too bluntly across all prompts. While a universal depiction makes sense for general requests like a nurse or a person walking a dog, historical prompts obviously require a much narrower and accurate distribution of results.
Hassabis emphasizes that Google cares deeply about historical accuracy and is actively working to refine these nuances in advanced AI. He also acknowledges the broader complexities of generative AI, noting that preventing misuse by bad actors and authoritarian regimes remains a very complex issue that likely demands a whole-of-society response.
