Google releases two new Android applications called Live Transcribe and Sound Amplifier to assist deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. These tools aim to break down communication barriers and provide greater independence for the estimated 900 million people who will experience hearing loss by 2055.
Live Transcribe uses cloud-based automatic speech recognition to turn real-world speech into real-time captions on a phone screen. Inspired by a deaf Google research scientist who struggled with costly and cumbersome transcription services, the app allows users to have everyday conversations without needing extra devices or advance preparation.
The app supports over 70 languages and dialects, receiving design validation from partners at Gallaudet University. Users report life-changing benefits, such as the ability to communicate easily with young family members without relying on outside help from other people.
