Google Reveals YouTube Generates $15 Billion in Annual Ad Revenue

Alphabet discloses for the first time that YouTube brings in $15 billion annually from advertising. The video platform now accounts for roughly 10 percent of Google's total revenue.

Google reveals that YouTube generates nearly $5 billion in ad revenue in the fourth quarter of 2019, bringing its annual total to $15 billion. This disclosure marks the first time in the platform's nearly 15-year history under Google that the company shares specific financial figures for the video site. The announcement comes as part of Alphabet's latest earnings report, the first under newly instated CEO Sundar Pichai.

These figures show that YouTube contributes roughly 10 percent to Google's overall revenue, establishing itself as a massive financial engine for the search giant. The video platform's ad business is nearly one-fifth the size of Facebook's and is more than six times larger than Amazon-owned Twitch. This financial transparency provides a new perspective on the scale and profitability of online video platforms.

Beyond advertising, Google reports that YouTube has more than 20 million paying subscribers across its Premium and Music Premium tiers. The platform also boasts more than 2 million subscribers to its paid TV service. While the revenue from these subscription products is bundled into Google's "other" category, the overall numbers solidify YouTube's status as a dominant force in both the ad-supported and paid streaming markets.
