Google brings Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging to all Android users in the US ahead of its year-end schedule. The update replaces the aging SMS standard with a modern protocol that introduces iMessage-like capabilities to Android devices. Users simply need to update both the Messages app and Carrier Services to unlock the new functionality.
The RCS upgrade includes several highly requested features that fundamentally improve the texting experience. People now see read receipts, real-time typing indicators, and enhanced group messaging options. The protocol also supports much larger file transfers, bridging a long-standing gap between Android and Apple devices.
This rollout follows a rare joint effort by the four major US carriers to accelerate RCS adoption back in October. Users in the UK and France already have access to the feature, with additional countries planning to launch soon. However, the implementation currently lacks end-to-end encryption, which remains a notable limitation for privacy-focused users.
