Google Search Introduces Universal Watchlist for Movies and TV Shows

Google adds a universal watchlist feature to Search, allowing mobile users to save and organize movie and TV show recommendations. The tool builds on existing entertainment suggestions to help users track content across multiple streaming providers.

Google introduces a universal watchlist feature to Search that helps users keep track of movies and TV shows they want to watch. Mobile users access this tool by searching "what to watch," which reveals organized suggestions at the top of the results. These recommendations are filterable by type, category, price, and streaming provider, allowing users to easily find content that suits their current mood.

To build a list, users simply tap the "Watchlist" button in any movie or show preview window. They also have the option to mark items as "Watched" to train Google's algorithm on their personal tastes. The saved list appears as a dedicated tab within the "What to watch" section, and users access it quickly at any time by searching "my watchlist" or navigating to the "Collections" area in the Google app.

While this built-in feature offers convenient tracking for casual viewers, it faces competition from dedicated apps like TV Time and Reelgood that provide more granular experiences, such as episode-by-episode tracking and direct device streaming. Nevertheless, keeping users engaged within Google's ecosystem aligns with the company's broader business strategy. This watchlist addition arrives alongside other entertainment-focused updates, including new content rows for Android TV devices.
