Google signs a $2.4 billion deal with AI coding startup Windsurf to hire its top leadership and secure licensing rights. Under this agreement, Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and a small group of senior employees join Google’s DeepMind AI team to advance agentic coding. Google emphasizes that this is a talent and licensing arrangement rather than a direct investment in the startup.
This massive deal emerges just after Windsurf's planned $3 billion acquisition by OpenAI collapses. Bloomberg reports that the OpenAI deal falls through because Windsurf wants to block Microsoft, a major OpenAI investor, from accessing its intellectual property. With the OpenAI exclusivity period ending, Windsurf pivots to Google to secure a lucrative alternative partnership.
Despite losing its top executives, Windsurf continues to operate independently with most of its 250 employees remaining at the company. The startup, formerly known as Codeium, continues to develop AI coding tools like Cascade for its business clients. Because Google only secures a nonexclusive license to Windsurf's technology, the startup retains the freedom to license its platform to other companies in the future.
