Google Shutters Stadia Streaming Service After Failing to Attract Users
Google is permanently closing its Stadia cloud gaming platform after a three-year run that fails to gain enough market traction. The company plans to issue full refunds for all hardware, game, and add-on content purchases.
Google officially announces it is shutting down its Stadia cloud gaming service after the platform fails to gain significant user traction over three years. The tech giant launches Stadia in November 2019 with the promise of playing high-end video games without expensive consoles, but the service struggles to attract a dedicated player base.
Players retain access to their existing game libraries and continue playing through January 18, 2023, before the servers go offline permanently. During this wind-down period, Google asks users to explore ways to save their gameplay data before the service completely disappears.
In a rare move for the company, Google pledges to refund all Stadia hardware purchases made through the Google Store alongside all game and add-on content purchases made through the Stadia store. The company expects to process these refunds automatically, providing a full financial reset for the platform's remaining customers.
