Google Tests ChatGPT Rivals as AI Race Heats Up
Google is testing new AI chatbots and search designs internally to counter the threat posed by ChatGPT. Employees are currently trying out a tool called Apprentice Bard.
Google is testing new artificial intelligence-powered chat products as part of a "code red" effort to respond to the popular ChatGPT. The company is developing a project called Atlas under its cloud unit and testing a chatbot named Apprentice Bard, which allows employees to ask questions and receive detailed answers similar to ChatGPT.
The tech giant is also experimenting with a new search desktop design that uses a question-and-answer format. These internal tests come after employees recently expressed concerns about Google's competitive edge in AI following the sudden success of ChatGPT, a chatbot launched by OpenAI and backed by Microsoft.
Google's AI chief Jeff Dean previously stated that the company is moving more conservatively than a small startup due to the "reputational risk" of providing wrong information. However, leadership hints that the public may see similar AI products launched sometime this year as Google works to protect its core search business.
