Google introduces a new Android-based XR platform designed to accommodate advanced AI features across various devices like headsets and glasses. The company releases the first developer preview for Android XR today, which supports familiar tools such as ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, and OpenXR. This new platform aims to make it easier for developers to build spatial applications using existing skills.

The Android XR platform makes its debut on Samsung's Project Moohan headset, which goes on sale next year after facing previous delays. Users can seamlessly switch between fully immersive virtual environments and augmented real-world views, all while controlling the device through Google's Gemini AI. Because the platform builds directly on Android, most existing mobile and tablet apps from the Play Store automatically work on the headset, giving it a massive advantage in app availability over competitors.

Google strategically positions this expansive app ecosystem as a direct counter to Apple's expensive Vision Pro, which suffers from a limited app library and a prohibitive price point. To enrich the user experience, Google redesigns core services like YouTube, Google TV, Chrome, Maps, and Google Photos specifically for immersive screens. Additionally, the company provides developers with an Android XR Emulator inside Android Studio to test and visualize their spatial apps using a standard keyboard and mouse.
