Google Unveils LaMDA 2 Language Model and AI Test Kitchen App

Google introduces LaMDA 2, an upgraded conversational AI that breaks down complex topics, alongside AI Test Kitchen, an interactive app for public demos.

Google reveals LaMDA 2, the next generation of its Language Model for Dialog Applications, during its recent I/O keynote. This upgraded AI system specializes in breaking down complex topics into simple explanations and generating unique, natural conversations across millions of subjects. The model learns by analyzing vast amounts of text from the public web, including social media, Wikipedia, and books, to predict and generate highly contextual responses.

Demonstrations highlight LaMDA 2's ability to handle diverse queries, such as describing the creatures of the Marianas Trench or providing step-by-step tips for planting a vegetable garden. Despite these impressive capabilities, Google acknowledges that the system is not perfect and sometimes struggles with accuracy, a flaw also present in the previous version which occasionally provided false information. CEO Sundar Pichai emphasizes that ongoing work aims to resolve these shortcomings.

To allow broader interaction with this technology, Google launches AI Test Kitchen, a new interactive app hub. This platform lets users engage with AI models like LaMDA 2 in controlled, constrained ways, such as exploring specific topics and drilling down into related subtopics. The initiative serves as a public showcase for Google's AI research while gathering valuable feedback to improve future models.
