Google Research reveals the Pathways Language Model (PaLM), a massive 540-billion-parameter AI system that surpasses average human performance on the BIG-bench benchmark. The model outperforms other state-of-the-art systems on the majority of the 29 natural language processing tasks it is evaluated against. PaLM also demonstrates impressive capabilities in complex areas such as logical inference and joke explanation.
Engineers train PaLM using an autoregressive decoder-only Transformer architecture on a record-setting cluster of 6,144 TPU chips. This massive computing power relies on Google's Pathways technology to coordinate the training process efficiently. By utilizing a new chain of thought prompting method, the system achieves top-tier results on several demanding reasoning benchmarks that challenge traditional AI models.
According to the researchers, PaLM represents a significant step toward Google's ultimate Pathways vision.
