Google Unveils Stadia Game Streaming Service at GDC 2019

Google introduces Stadia, a new game-streaming platform that promises to let players run high-end games on any connected device instantly.

Google unveils Stadia, a new game-streaming service that brings the "Netflix for games" concept to life. The platform allows users to play high-end video games on any connected device, including smartphones, smart TVs, and Mac computers. At launch, Stadia streams games in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second with HDR color, with plans to eventually support 8K quality.

The service introduces unique features that change how consumers buy and play games. Viewers watch a YouTube trailer and click a "Play" button to instantly load the game in their Chrome browser in as little as five seconds. Additionally, the Crowd Play feature lets audiences join a streamer's live game, while State Share allows players to send clickable links that drop friends directly into specific game sections.

Google prepares for this launch by hiring industry veterans like Phil Harrison and Jade Raymond, who leads the new Stadia Games and Entertainment development division. This announcement follows the successful Project Stream beta test, which seamlessly ran a AAA game on older laptop hardware. Google enters a competitive market as other tech giants like Microsoft also build similar cloud-gaming platforms.
