Google Upgrades Featured Snippets With New AI Model
Google is improving its featured snippets using a new AI system that cross-references answers for accuracy and reduces responses to nonsensical questions.
Google is updating its featured snippets with a new artificial intelligence system called the Multitask Unified Model. This AI enhancement allows the search engine to cross-reference the bolded text in a snippet against other high-quality search results to ensure they convey the same meaning, even if the wording is different.
The new system also tackles the issue of nonsensical queries by identifying when the premise of a question is false. Google reports that featured snippets now appear 40% less often for these flawed questions, preventing confusing or misleading answers like suggesting Snoopy assassinated Abraham Lincoln.
Additionally, Google is expanding its use of warning messages for searches where the system lacks high confidence in the available results. While these content advisories previously appeared for emerging topics without established information, the company now deploys them more broadly to alert users about potentially unreliable search results.
