Groupon Cofounder Raises $200 Million For $3.1 Billion Genomic Data Firm Tempus

Eric Lefkofsky's Chicago-based health startup Tempus raises a $200 million funding round, pushing its total capital past $500 million and reaching a $3.1 billion valuation. The company uses genomic sequencing and data analysis to help doctors create customized cancer treatments.

Groupon cofounder Eric Lefkofsky brings his aggressive growth strategy to Tempus, a Chicago-based genomic testing and data analysis company that raises a new $200 million funding round. This latest investment brings the three-year-old startup's total raised capital to over $500 million and pushes its valuation to $3.1 billion. Tempus currently employs nearly 700 people and stands as one of Chicago's most highly valued private companies.

The company builds a platform that collects, structures, and analyzes unorganized clinical data from electronic medical record systems. Tempus also sequences patient DNA in its own laboratory to generate valuable genomic data. By combining these data sources, the startup helps doctors create highly customized, individualized treatment plans for their patients.

Tempus partners with numerous cancer treatment centers to gather real-world human data and already generates significant revenue as early partners expand into different cancer subgroups. Although its genomic testing currently focuses strictly on cancers, Lefkofsky plans to expand the platform into other disease areas like diabetes and depression in the near future.
