Hackers Return Stolen Funds After Record $600 Million Crypto Heist

Hackers steal approximately $600 million from Poly Network in what experts call the largest decentralized finance heist in history. The cybercriminals exploit a vulnerability in the platform, which connects different blockchains so they operate together seamlessly. After the initial theft, the attackers transfer the digital assets to three separate cryptocurrency addresses.

In a surprising turn of events, the hackers start returning the stolen funds shortly after the attack. They embed a message in a cryptocurrency transaction stating they are ready to give the money back, and Poly Network provides three specific wallet addresses for the return. Within hours, the attackers send back over $258 million of the illicitly gained cryptocurrency.

Blockchain analysts attribute this sudden reversal to the inherent transparency of the technology. Because all transactions remain visible on the public ledger, laundering and cashing out such a massive amount of crypto proves extremely difficult. Security researchers also report they successfully track down the attacker's email, IP address, and device information, further motivating the hacker's decision to surrender the assets.
