Harvard Researchers Develop Lightweight Robo-Shorts to Ease Walking and Running

Harvard's Wyss Institute creates a soft, low-profile exosuit that reduces the metabolic effort of walking and running using intelligent cable-driven assistance.

Researchers at Harvard’s Wyss Institute design a soft robotic exosuit that looks like a pair of shorts with a mechanical attachment at the lower back. Unlike bulky cinematic exoskeletons, this low-profile device uses cables connected to leg straps to assist the hip-extension movement during ordinary locomotion. An onboard neural network detects the wearer's gait and phase of movement to provide a perfectly timed physical boost to the legs.

In testing, the wearable robot reduces the metabolic load of walking by 9.3 percent and running by 4 percent. While these gains seem modest, lead study author Conor Walsh explains that the primary goal is to prove a portable system reliably assists multiple activities rather than maximizing raw strength. The entire apparatus weighs just 5 kilograms, with the battery and motor pack positioned near the body's center of mass so it feels lighter than it actually is.

This technology shifts the focus of exosuits away from heavy industrial lifting and toward everyday assistance for ordinary people. Developers envision the device helping elderly individuals stand up from chairs or aiding injury recovery by reducing fatigue. Although the military shows strong interest in the technology for active duty soldiers and wounded warriors, the most promising applications remain in daily civilian healthcare and mobility.
