Successful screenwriters like John August express deep concern that powerful new AI tools use existing scripts as training data to generate new stories, treatments, and ideas. The WGA argues that this practice devalues their work and threatens their livelihoods as the technology continues to advance at a rapid pace.
To protect its members, the WGA proposes strict regulations that prevent AI from writing or rewriting literary material and prohibit the use of writers' work as source material for AI training. The union makes it clear that while AI is evolving, it lacks the human nuance required to create compelling creative stories.
