HP Acquires Humane Assets for $116 Million as AI Pin Shuts Down
HP buys the intellectual property and team behind Humane's AI Pin for $116 million, immediately ending sales of the short-lived device. Existing AI Pins lose all functionality and cloud connectivity by the end of February.
HP acquires most of Humane's assets for $116 million, officially ending the short lifespan of the AI Pin hardware startup. The company immediately discontinues sales of the $499 wearable device, which originally launched in April 2024 as a bold attempt to replace the smartphone. Despite raising over $230 million and generating significant early hype, the device fails to impress reviewers and faces severe customer backlash.
Humane warns existing customers that their AI Pins stop functioning completely on February 28 at 12 p.m. PST. After this date, the devices lose all server connectivity, rendering calls, messaging, AI queries, and cloud access useless. The company urges users to back up their photos and data immediately, while offering refunds only to customers who purchased the device within the last 90 days.
Under the acquisition terms, HP absorbs Humane's engineers and product managers to form a new division called HP IQ. This AI innovation lab focuses on integrating Humane's CosmOS operating system into HP's future personal computers, printers, and work ecosystem. The $116 million sale price represents a massive drop from the $750 million to $1 billion valuation Humane originally sought when it shopped itself to buyers last year.
