Chinese tech giant Huawei prepares to lay off hundreds of workers in the United States as it deals with a federal blacklist. The job cuts primarily target Futurewei, Huawei's American research subsidiary that employs 850 people across labs in Texas, California, and Washington state.
The Trump administration places Huawei on a commerce blacklist over national security concerns, which bars US companies from selling to the telecom firm without special approval. This severe restriction causes Huawei to expect a massive $30 billion revenue hit over the next two years and forces the company to scrap upcoming product launches like a new laptop.
Although President Trump temporarily eases restrictions following a G-20 truce with China's president, White House officials clarify this move does not grant Huawei a general amnesty. The government only plans to issue more specific licenses to US firms whose sales to Huawei do not compromise national security, leaving the company's long-term US operations in serious doubt.
