IBM Closes Major China Research Entity After Mass Layoffs
IBM is shutting down its China research and development arm after laying off over 1,000 employees. The company insists the closure does not affect its ability to serve local clients.
IBM is shutting down IBM (China) Investment Company Limited, a major entity established 32 years ago to manage local research and development operations. A company representative states that the unit completes its mission and officially ceases operations by the end of March. This closure follows the dismissal of approximately 1,600 employees from IBM's Chinese research labs last year.
Despite this significant shutdown, IBM continues its operations in China through a separate entity called IBM (China) Company Limited. The company emphasizes that the transition does not impact its ability to support local clients. IBM remains focused on helping Chinese businesses leverage hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence technologies using its consulting expertise.
This move reflects a broader trend among Western tech giants that are trimming their Chinese businesses due to ongoing geopolitical uncertainties. While the massive research entity closes its doors, former IBM employees are already transitioning to new roles in the local technology sector, with some joining state-backed artificial intelligence and cloud computing firms.
