India Pledges Over $1 Billion for AI Startups at Massive Impact Summit
India hosts a major AI summit with top tech leaders and announces a $1.1 billion venture fund for artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing startups.
India hosts a massive four-day AI Impact Summit to attract global artificial intelligence investment, drawing top executives from OpenAI, Anthropic, Nvidia, Google, and Microsoft. The event features prominent figures like Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Highlighting the country's massive user base, Altman reveals that India accounts for over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it the second-largest market for the AI chatbot.
To bolster its domestic AI ecosystem, the Indian government earmarks $1.1 billion for a state-backed venture capital fund targeting AI and advanced manufacturing startups. Private investments also make headlines, with Blackstone acquiring a majority stake in Indian AI startup Neysa through a $600 million equity raise. Additionally, Bengaluru-based data center power startup C2i secures $15 million in a Series A round led by Peak XV.
Despite the optimistic investments, industry leaders warn of significant disruptions to India's traditional IT services sector. Vinod Khosla of Khosla Ventures predicts that IT services and BPO industries could almost completely disappear within five years due to AI advancements. Meanwhile, major tech companies deepen their roots in the country, with Anthropic opening its first Indian office in Bengaluru and AMD partnering with Tata Consultancy Services to build rack-scale AI infrastructure.
