Indian Education Giant Byju's Acquires U.S. Kids Learning Startup Osmo for $120M
Byju's purchases Osmo to expand its blended learning capabilities for young children, paying $120 million in an all-stock deal. The acquisition aligns with Byju's goal to launch global English courses for kids aged three to eight.
Indian education company Byju's acquires U.S.-based Osmo for $120 million in an all-stock deal just weeks after raising $540 million in funding. Osmo's founders choose the stock option to demonstrate their confidence in combining resources with Byju's, a company currently valued at nearly $4 billion. This strategic purchase marks Byju's first major move using its newly acquired capital.
Osmo creates blended learning apps that merge digital and offline play for children aged five to twelve. The system uses a special base, a red reflector, and physical game pieces alongside iPads or Kindle Fire tablets to teach subjects like math, spelling, and drawing. The startup currently reaches about a million families and operates in roughly 20,000 schools, with ninety percent of its user base located in the United States.
This acquisition provides Byju's with an ideal product to complement its existing educational videos and games for older students. The company prepares to launch a new global service offering English courses for children aged three to eight, and Osmo's technology plays a central role in that expansion. The founders plan to significantly increase the content available on the Osmo platform immediately following the acquisition.
