Indian Telecom Giant Vodafone Idea Rebrands as Vi Amid Fierce Competition
Vodafone Idea officially rebrands as 'Vi' to mark a fresh start following its multi-billion subscriber loss to rival Jio. The merged telecom operator continues to invest in 4G expansion as it seeks a turnaround.
Indian telecom operator Vodafone Idea unveils a new brand identity called 'Vi' as it seeks a fresh start following the completion of its merger integration. Vodafone Group CEO Nick Read states that this new name combines the strengths of both Vodafone India and Idea Cellular into a single, unified company.
The rebranding comes at a critical time for the telecom giant, which loses over 100 million subscribers to Reliance Jio in recent years. Jio currently dominates the Indian market with nearly 400 million subscribers by offering cut-rate mobile data tariffs and attracting over $20 billion in investments from tech giants like Facebook and Google.
Despite not turning a profit since the merger, Vi remains committed to expanding its 4G network, which now reaches over 1 billion people in India. The company recently secures shareholder approval to raise $3.4 billion through equity and debt to fund its ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.
