Inflection AI Secures $1.3 Billion to Expand Personal Assistant Pi
Inflection AI raises $1.3 billion from major tech figures and Nvidia to develop its personal AI assistant, Pi. The funding boosts the startup's valuation to $4 billion as it builds one of the largest AI training clusters.
Inflection AI closes a massive $1.3 billion funding round led by Microsoft, Nvidia, Bill Gates, and Eric Schmidt, bringing its total raised to $1.525 billion and valuing the company at $4 billion. The startup, which operates with a small team of about 35 employees, aims to create personal AI for everyone. CEO Mustafa Suleyman views personal AI as the most transformational tool of our lifetimes and plans to use this capital to fully build out the company's first major product.
The company's debut product is an AI assistant named Pi, which is designed to act as a kind and supportive companion that provides knowledge tailored to a user's specific interests and needs. Pi runs on Inflection-1, a proprietary AI model that performs competitively with models like OpenAI's GPT-3.5 on common sense and academic benchmarks, although it currently lags behind in coding capabilities.
To overcome these limitations and develop larger, more capable models, Inflection partners with Nvidia and cloud provider CoreWeave to construct a massive AI training cluster featuring 22,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. With this new financial backing, Inflection firmly establishes itself as the second-best-funded generative AI startup in the industry, trailing only OpenAI.
