The chatbot operates in beta and is completely free to use through a dedicated web portal, an iOS app, and various messaging platforms like Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and SMS.
The interface feels familiar to anyone who uses ChatGPT, but Pi actively distinguishes itself from OpenAI's creation. When asked about the differences, Pi explains that it is designed specifically for two-way conversation rather than mere text generation, and it frequently reminds users that it is an artificial entity with no physical body. This transparency aligns with the company's goal of creating a supportive sounding board rather than mimicking a human replacement.
DeepMind co-founder Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan launched Inflection AI alongside LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman specifically to revolutionize human-computer dialogue. By releasing Pi to the public during the peak of the generative AI boom, the founders aim to provide millions of people with a curious and kind counterpart. Suleyman emphasizes that despite the early stage of development, this technology marks a major inflection point for personal AI tools.
