Instagram Debuts Reels Feature to Rival TikTok

Instagram introduces Reels, a new short-form video feature allowing users to create 15-second clips with audio and effects. The launch represents Instagram's latest effort to compete directly with TikTok for trending cultural content.

Instagram launches Reels, a new feature that allows users to create and discover short, entertaining videos up to 15 seconds long. This new addition represents Instagram's direct answer to the popular app TikTok, mirroring the platform's familiar format of collaging edited video fragments and sounds. Users record, collage, and edit these brief clips to showcase what the platform calls "the best of trending culture on Instagram."

The creative tools available within Reels include a wide-ranging gallery of AR effects created by both Instagram and individual creators. An Align feature helps users seamlessly transition between clips for outfit changes or adding friends, while a built-in music library supplies the audio. Additional controls consist of a timer and countdown, as well as speed functions that allow creators to slow down or speed up their footage.

Once created, users share these videos directly to their Instagram feed for their followers to see, or to a broader audience if they possess a public account. To encourage discovery, Instagram introduces a dedicated section on the Explore page specifically for browsing Reels. The platform states that this feature gives people new ways to express themselves and helps aspiring creators take centre stage on a global level.
