Instagram expands its sensitive content controls, allowing users to filter out potentially upsetting posts from recommendations across the entire app. Previously, this filtering option only applies to the Explore tab, but it now extends to search, Reels, hashtag pages, and in-feed suggested posts. The company plans to roll out these updated settings to all users within the coming weeks.
The platform offers three broad settings for users to control their experience: seeing less sensitive content, a standard default amount, or more sensitive content. Users under the age of 18 remain restricted from choosing the option to see more sensitive material. Instead of allowing users to mute specific topics, Instagram bundles a wide variety of subjects into this single vague category.
Instagram defines sensitive content as posts that do not necessarily violate community rules but could upset some users, including depictions of fighting, sexually suggestive imagery, and promotions of tobacco or cosmetic procedures. Critics express concern over the platform's lack of transparency and its decision to group completely different topics like sex education and violence into one generic bucket. This broad approach continues to draw frustration, particularly from communities that historically face disproportionate censorship on the platform.
