Instagram Reels Expands to 50 Countries to Challenge TikTok

Instagram launches its TikTok competitor, Reels, across 50 countries including the U.S. to capture short-form video creators.

Instagram launches Reels globally in over 50 countries, including the U.S., as its primary challenge to TikTok. This expansion brings the short-form video feature to major international markets like India, Brazil, the U.K., and Japan. The timing aligns perfectly with TikTok's uncertain future in the U.S. due to potential bans or forced sales by the Trump administration.

The development of Reels stems from Facebook's earlier experiments, specifically the now-shuttered standalone app Lasso. Those tests provide Facebook with valuable user behavioral data without the pressure of generating immediate revenue. Instagram then pilots the concept as Cenas in Brazil before expanding to India and Europe throughout 2020.

Reels aims to attract a younger Gen Z audience that does not currently overlap with Instagram's traditional user base. The feature allows users to create 15-second videos with AR effects, a countdown timer, an align tool, and licensed music. By offering a quick-swipe browsing experience, Instagram hopes to steal TikTok's audience regardless of whether the rival app remains operational.
