Instagram Stories Hits 500 Million Daily Users Amid Facebook App Overhaul

Instagram Stories reaches half a billion daily users while Facebook plans major product updates across its family of apps. The company also outlines a gradual shift toward unified, encrypted messaging and family-wide metrics.

Instagram Stories now attracts 500 million daily users, representing roughly half of Instagram's total 1 billion user base. This milestone shows significant growth from the 400 million daily users reported in June 2018. The popularity of the feature drives strong advertiser interest, with 2 million businesses now purchasing Stories ads across Facebook's various properties.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg outlines a broad product roadmap that prioritizes security, privacy, and new social experiences. Key initiatives include expanding ephemeral messaging, integrating WhatsApp payments into more countries, and launching the Oculus Quest headset this spring. Zuckerberg also emphasizes that Facebook Watch will become the mainstream home for video content as the company shifts viewing away from the traditional News Feed.

Facebook plans to unify the technical infrastructure of Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp to enable encrypted cross-app communication. Although this integration likely will not arrive until 2020, Zuckerberg frames it as a privacy measure that decentralizes data and keeps information off company servers. To reflect this interconnected ecosystem, Facebook will eventually phase out individual app metrics in favor of combined family metrics that currently total 2.7 billion monthly users.
