Intel Unveils Gaudi3 Chip to Challenge Nvidia in AI Hardware Race

Intel unveils Gaudi3, a new artificial intelligence chip designed to power generative AI software and compete directly with offerings from Nvidia and AMD. Set to launch in 2024, this new hardware targets the massive chip farms required to run prominent AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger reveals the chip at an "AI Everywhere" launch event in New York as the company pushes to capture a larger share of the booming AI hardware market.
Nvidia currently dominates the AI chip space with its H100 GPU, a market position that drives a nearly 230% surge in its stock this year compared to Intel's 68% rise. Intel develops its Gaudi line after acquiring chip developer Habana Labs in 2019, and Gaudi3 specifically aims to draw AI companies away from Nvidia's established ecosystem. The new chip also faces competition from AMD's forthcoming MI300X processor.
Beyond data center hardware, Intel introduces Core Ultra processors for Windows laptops and fifth-generation Xeon server chips to drive the emerging "AI PC" category. These traditional processors feature a specialized AI component called an NPU to run AI programs faster directly on consumer devices. This move reflects a broader industry trend as traditional processor makers reorient their product lines to integrate artificial intelligence capabilities across all computing levels.
