Internal documents obtained by The Wall Street Journal reveal that Facebook knows its photo-sharing app Instagram is toxic to a sizable percentage of young users, particularly teenage girls. Over the past three years, the tech giant's own researchers repeatedly find that the platform negatively impacts the mental health of millions of youth.

According to a 2019 internal presentation, Instagram makes body image issues worse for one in three teen girls. Additionally, teens across all groups consistently blame the app for increases in anxiety and depression, describing these harmful effects without any prompting from researchers.

Despite possessing this damning data, Facebook makes minimal effort to address these critical issues and actively downplays them to the public. These leaked files are part of a larger trove of internal communications, known as the Facebook Files, that expose a significant gap between the company's private research and its public messaging.
