Intuitive Machines Builds Full Stack for Emerging Lunar Economy
After securing a major cislunar communications contract, Intuitive Machines positions itself as a commercial platform provider for a growing lunar economy. The company leverages its historic moon landing and new data capabilities to offer end-to-end space services.
Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus expresses strong optimism following his company's historic first private moon landing, viewing that achievement as just the beginning of a much larger vision. The company aims to build a complete technological stack that provides all the necessary components for missions to the moon, on the lunar surface, and in orbit around it. This approach positions Intuitive Machines as a full-fledged commercial space services company rather than just a traditional government contractor for NASA or the Pentagon.
The firm recently secures a massive multi-billion-dollar contract to become the sole provider of cislunar communications services for the Artemis program. Altemus describes this data transfer and analytics capability as the crucial third leg of the company's business model, joining their commercial lunar payload services delivery contract and their lunar terrain vehicle infrastructure contract. Together, these three elements form a comprehensive commercial platform that makes a sustainable lunar economy possible.
This commercial platform replaces the historical reliance on tremendously expensive, one-off "exquisite" space systems that carry nine-figure price tags. Interestingly, a past miscommunication with NASA actually forces Intuitive Machines to develop its own independent lunar communication network back in 2019, mistakenly believing they were forbidden from using the Deep Space Network. That necessary improvisation ultimately gives the company the exact technical competency required to win their current role as the sole communications provider for the lunar region.
