iOS 18 Launches With Deep Customization But Delays AI Features
Apple releases iOS 18 with a strong focus on personalization and interface overhauls, but delays its highly anticipated Apple Intelligence to a later update. The update brings customizable home screens, a revamped Control Center, and new privacy tools for locked apps.
Apple releases iOS 18 today, prioritizing deep personalization over the heavily hyped Apple Intelligence features. The AI capabilities do not appear in this initial rollout and instead arrive later with iOS 18.1, starting in the U.S. before expanding globally. In the meantime, users experience a significant shift in how they interact with their iPhone's interface.
The update delivers major changes to the Home Screen and Control Center. Users now place icons anywhere on the grid, enlarge them to hide text labels, and apply custom tinted colors. Third-party developers also have the ability to release their own custom icons. Additionally, the Control Center receives a complete overhaul with four default pages covering favorites, music, home, and connectivity, all of which are fully customizable.
Privacy and app management see notable upgrades as iOS 18 introduces the ability to lock individual apps behind Face ID, Touch ID, or a passcode. Users also hide these protected apps from the Home Screen, moving them to a secret folder within the App Library. Furthermore, the Photos app undergoes a redesign that replaces the bottom navigation tabs with a single-page layout to better surface images from the user's library.
