The iPhone 16 officially goes on sale today, but early adopters face a major compromise because the device lacks its most hyped feature. Apple CEO Tim Cook called it the first iPhone built for Apple Intelligence, yet the handsets do not actually include these AI capabilities out of the box. This represents a surprising shift for a company known for delivering polished, complete products rather than half-baked promises.
Apple currently trails competitors like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI in actually shipping artificial intelligence tools to consumers. The initial Apple Intelligence features, which include text rewriting, notification summaries, and audio transcription, largely mirror functionality that already exists elsewhere. Instead of leading in innovation, Apple bets that its strict privacy approach will convince buyers to wait for its version of these tools.
Customers face a lengthy and fragmented rollout if they purchase the device today. Apple plans to launch a handful of AI features in October, but initially only in U.S. English, which limits a massive portion of its international user base. More advanced features like visual search and Image Playground arrive later, while support for additional languages does not appear until sometime in 2025.
