Israeli Startup Juganu Brings Tunable UV Lighting Disinfection Tech to US
Juganu launches its J.Protect lighting system in the US, using UVA and UVC light to deactivate pathogens on surfaces. The company is partnering with major firms like Comcast and Qualcomm as businesses seek new safety technologies.
Israeli startup Juganu begins selling its J.Protect lighting system in the United States to help buildings prevent the spread of COVID-19. The venture-backed company designs lighting that emits specific wavelengths to disinfect surfaces and deactivate pathogens, claiming clinical validation from a study at Bar-Ilan University. The new product is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 48 states.
The technology utilizes two types of ultraviolet light depending on room occupancy to target viruses and bacteria. When people are present, the system emits safer UVA light that renders viruses inert after eight hours of exposure. If a room is empty, the lighting switches to more potent UVC light to thoroughly disinfect the space in under an hour.
Juganu is currently working with major corporations like Comcast, Qualcomm, and NCR Corp. to deploy these disinfecting lighting systems across the country. Although the company tests its technology on surfaces, it does not evaluate its effects on aerosolized viral particles, which represent the primary transmission method for the novel coronavirus. Backed by $53 million in funding, Juganu is now taking US orders after successful pre-sales in Israel and India.
