Italy officially bans ChatGPT, making it the first Western country to block the popular artificial intelligence chatbot. The Italian Data Protection Watchdog orders OpenAI to temporarily stop processing Italian users' data while investigating a suspected breach of Europe's strict privacy regulations.
The regulator cites a recent data breach that exposes conversation titles and argues that OpenAI lacks a legal basis for collecting massive amounts of personal data to train its algorithms. The watchdog also raises concerns about the absence of age restrictions and the chatbot's tendency to deliver factually incorrect information, threatening OpenAI with a multi-million dollar fine if it fails to address these issues within 20 days.
Other governments simultaneously grapple with how to regulate generative AI as the technology advances faster than lawmakers can respond. Experts warn that while AI offers tremendous benefits like speeding up medical diagnoses and eliminating tedious tasks, society must carefully manage the technology to ensure it serves humans rather than making them subservient to machines.
