Italy Promises to Lift ChatGPT Ban If OpenAI Enacts Privacy Protections
Italian regulators state they will restore access to ChatGPT by the end of April if OpenAI implements required data privacy and child safety measures. The temporary ban originates from concerns over GDPR compliance and the potential exposure of minors to inappropriate content.
Italy's privacy watchdog announces it will lift the national ban on ChatGPT if OpenAI implements specific safeguards to protect minors and user data by April 30. The Guarantor for the Protection of Personal Data (GPDP) blocks access to the chatbot last month to investigate potential violations of the European Union's GDPR and Italian data privacy laws.
Regulators express concern that the AI model, which trains on vast amounts of internet text, recalls and emits sensitive personal information like phone numbers or addresses. Additionally, officials worry that users inadvertently disclose private data to the system and that the chatbot exposes minors to inappropriate or harmful content that does not match their level of development.
To resolve the situation, the GPDP demands that OpenAI increase transparency regarding how ChatGPT stores and processes information and establishes a clear legal basis for using user data in algorithmic training. The authority states that it removes the temporary processing limitation only if OpenAI meets these specific requirements by the deadline, which restores access for Italian users.
