Japanese Spacecraft Successfully Lands on Distant Ryugu Asteroid
Japan's Hayabusa2 probe touches down on the Ryugu asteroid to collect ancient samples that may reveal the origins of life and the solar system.
A Japanese spacecraft successfully touches down on the Ryugu asteroid, located 280 million kilometers from Earth. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) confirms the landing after data from the Hayabusa2 probe shows the expected changes in speed and direction as it makes contact with the ancient space rock.
The probe fires a bullet into the asteroid's surface to stir up matter for collection. Ryugu contains organic material and water dating back 4.6 billion years to the formation of the solar system, making these samples incredibly valuable to scientists. Hayabusa2 also plans to blast a crater into the asteroid later to gather fresher, unexposed materials from beneath the surface.
Researchers hope these pristine space samples answer fundamental questions about the universe and whether elements from asteroids helped spark life on Earth. The spacecraft currently returns to its holding orbit above the asteroid to prepare for additional touchdowns later this year, though delayed communications mean full confirmation of the sample collection takes several days.
