John Deere introduces a fully autonomous 8R tractor that operates entirely without a human driver. The machine combines a traditional 8R tractor with TruSet tillage technology, a chisel plow, and advanced GPS guidance to tackle ongoing labor and productivity challenges in the agricultural industry.
The vehicle relies on six pairs of stereo cameras to provide 360-degree obstacle detection and precise distance calculations. A deep neural network processes every pixel of the captured images in just 100 milliseconds, allowing the tractor to make instantaneous decisions about whether to continue moving or stop when it encounters an unexpected object.
While John Deere already incorporates automation features like hands-free turning and remote performance management into its equipment, this autonomous system represents a major leap forward. The company views the release of this driverless machine as a significant step in a broader five-stage journey toward completely autonomous farming.
