Kaia Health Raises $10M to Tackle Chronic Pain With AI App
Digital therapeutics startup Kaia Health secures $10 million in Series A funding to expand its AI-powered app that helps users manage chronic pain without relying on addictive painkillers.
Kaia Health raises $10 million in Series A funding to expand its digital therapeutics app that offers an alternative to painkillers for chronic pain management. The startup provides a mobile platform focused on musculoskeletal disorders, delivering multimodal therapy that includes guided physical exercises, psychological techniques, and medical education. This approach aims to replace traditional acute pain treatments like surgery and pharmaceuticals, which founder Konstantin Mehl notes drive massive cost explosions within the healthcare system.
The application utilizes advanced computer vision technology to function as an autonomous personal trainer through a smartphone camera. As users perform their physical exercises, the AI visually monitors their movements to track repetitions and provide real-time vocal feedback on posture and motion. This digital coaching offers a highly accessible and affordable substitute for in-person physiotherapy, which often requires expensive visits to dedicated pain centers and involves long wait times for patients.
Kaia initially focuses on treating back pain, a condition Mehl personally struggled with for two years before founding the company in 2015. His experience drives the company's mission to democratize access to proven therapies and reduce reliance on opioid-based painkillers, a major crisis in the United States driven by over-prescription and addiction. By making effective treatment cheap and widely available, Kaia addresses the paradox of current chronic back pain remedies that Mehl describes as both incredibly expensive and largely ineffective.
