Lego Merges Star Wars IP with STEM Learning in New Droid Kit
Lego combines its popular Boost coding platform with iconic Star Wars characters for a new educational robotics set.
Lego introduces a new Star Wars-themed STEM kit that combines the beloved film franchise with its educational Lego Boost platform. The Droid Commander set allows kids to build three classic robots from the series, including R2-D2, Gonk, and the Mouse Droid. This marks the first time Lego applies its valuable Star Wars license directly to its coding and robotics line.
The set includes 1,177 pieces along with color and distance sensors and an interactive motor to bring the droids to life. Children use a companion app available on Android, iOS, and Fire devices to program their creations and complete 40 different missions. Tasks involve assisting an X-wing flight and tracking down rebels, which effectively disguises educational coding concepts behind engaging gameplay.
Lego releases the Droid Commander set on September 1, perfectly timed with the theatrical debut of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. This approach mirrors previous efforts like the littleBits Droid Inventor Kit, though Lego leverages its long-standing and highly successful relationship with the Star Wars brand. The combination of familiar characters and hands-on building offers a compelling entry point into basic programming.
