Lyft and Uber Pledge to Cover Driver Legal Fees Under Texas Abortion Ban
Lyft and Uber promise to pay all legal fees for drivers sued under Texas' new restrictive abortion law. The ride-hailing companies take this stand as the controversial law exposes drivers to massive fines for transporting women to clinics.
Lyft and Uber announce that they cover all legal fees for drivers who face lawsuits under Texas' new restrictive abortion law. The law, which takes effect this week, bans most abortions after six weeks and exposes anyone who aids the procedure to $10,000 fines, including rideshare drivers transporting women to clinics.
Lyft leads the charge by establishing a defense fund that pays 100% of legal costs for its drivers and donates $1 million to Planned Parenthood. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi quickly follows suit on Twitter, confirming that his company provides the exact same legal protections for its drivers on the platform.
This corporate pushback emerges as other Texas-based companies, such as Bumble and Match, also create relief funds in response to the controversial measure. Abortion rights advocates argue that this law effectively overturns the foundational protections established by Roe v. Wade in 1973.
